Chapter Nine

Clay pulled open the door to his apartment and heaved a heavy sigh. Another day over and he was no closer to solving the case than he’d been the day before.

He plopped into the chair and hit the remote just as his cell phone rang.

“This is Clay.”

“I haven’t heard from you in a while. What’s going on?”

Clay recognized his father’s voice immediately. “Hello, Dad. It’s been busy. Orders are up. We’re shipping about fifteen percent more than last year at this time.”

“I’m aware of that. I want to know about the investigation. What kind of progress have you made?”

Clay kept his tone light. “Still gathering information. Nothing specific yet.”

He could sense the uneasy silence at the other end of the line. Clay knew his father was frustrated by the lack of progress. Hell, he was frustrated, too.

Solving this case was one thing he could do for his father. But things weren’t clicking the way he’d hoped. Clay had even started to wonder if the audit firm had been right. Maybe the plant really didn’t have a problem.

“What’s your plan?” His father’s tone turned cool. “I assume you have one.”

“I’m going to a party in a couple of days.” Clay tried for upbeat. “Both Paul and John should be there, as well as another woman who I think could possibly be involved. My next step will depend on what I discover after speaking with them.”

“You know things don’t just happen,” his father pointed out. “You have to make them happen.”

Clay heard his dad’s frustration. Like his father, Clay had thought this investigation wouldn’t take long. But it had taken him all these weeks simply to get a feel for the town. Kaitlyn had been right—it was a tight-knit community, where little went on that somebody didn’t know about. That’s why Clay was so sure he could solve this case, if he just was given the time.

“I know you’re doing your best,” his father surprised him by saying. “I appreciate it.”

Clay hadn’t come to Shelby to “do his best,” he’d come to find the thief. And he wasn’t leaving town until the person who’d been stealing the memory chips was behind bars. If that meant he had to “make something happen,” that’s what he was going to do.
